Aquatic Plants
![]() Mother Nature’s perfection, when it comes to water, is unbeatable. We can learn much
from nature & should try to imitate her when building & maintaining ponds, streams, &
other water features. Big or small, formal or informal, rectangular or square, wide or
narrow, these are all personal preferences. Let your imagination guide you. However,
when it comes to keeping the water in your pond or other water feature clear and clean,
let Mother Nature be your model.
Plants - The Best Filters Known To Man!
From our experience, this is a good "recipe" for you pond:
1 Submerged Aquatic Plant bunch - per 2 square feet of water garden surface area (Anacharis, Horwort, Valisuaria or Dwarf Saggataria)

1 Floating Aquatic Plant - per 10 square feet of water garden surface area (Water Hyacinth, Water Lettuce or Salvinia)

1 Water Lily - per 15 to 20 square feet of water garden surface area (Offers shade, beauty & protection for fish from predators)

Marginal Aquatic Plants or equivalent in groupings - 25% of circumference of water garden

Submerged Aquatics
Anacharis (Egeria densa)Whirls of deep green leaves, occasionally sends tiny (1/4") white
flowers to the surface. It competes with algae by absorbing a great
number of nutrients from the water.
Zone 5 - 6
Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum)Hornwort has no true roots but can be anchored in the bottom of the
pond. Combats algae by consuming nutrients in the water & secreting
substances that inhibit the growth of algae.

Floating Aquatics
Water Hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes)Nearly transparent, intense lavender-blue flowers stand well above
deep, waxy-green foliage. Considered an annual in the North with a
fast growth rate, may be somewhat invasive.
Water Lettuce (Pistia stratoides)A unique light green lettuce-like foliage plant that floats "peacefully"
on the waters surface. Does the best in moving water, prefers some
shade. A fast growing annual.
