Benefits Of A Bog
![]() Although the word "bog" may have a nasty connotation, building a "bog filter" for your
pond or water garden is extremely beneficial & simple.
Adding a bog to your pond is helpful in many ways:
#1 - An Extra Filtration System - Running your pond water through a bog full of
aquatic & marginal plants acts as an extra, natural filtration system. It will help you
on your quest to have cleaner, healthier water.
#2 - A Second Habitat - The natural setting of a bog will attract & give safe harbor to
semi-aquatic life - newts, salamanders, insects & particularly frogs & toads. Here, these
sorts of life forms can thrive without threat of being eaten by the fish in your pond, thus
adding more life & action to your water garden setting.
#3 - No Extra Food For Your Fish - Some fish, particularly larger Koi, love to eat the
plants - like the Anacharis & Hornwort - you have placed in your main pond. You can't
blame the little guys, but they are not only eating your plants, they are munching
away at your pond's filtration = less clean & clear water = a less healthy pond
environment. Adding a bog provides a filtration system that these hungry fish cannot
destroy.
#4 - Added Beauty - Your imagination is the only limit when building your bog filter.
Using aquatic plants & marginals, you can create another attractive addition to
your pond.
![]() Here at Hoffman's
additional filtration system to the mechanical pumps & filters, for the new fish shipments
we have received. As you can see, it makes for a very attractive setting for the fish
during their quarantine & more importantly cleans the water & provides them a
healthier environment.
And over only a few months, the plants in our bog have tripled in size (compare the first
& second pictures to the rest)! The nutrients they absorb as they filter the water
have acted as a natural fertilizer for them!
Mechanical filtration is a must. Additives & treatments help, but they are only a quick
fix. Plants are the best water filtration a pond can have! And the addition of a
bog will only help futher.
If you have any questions about adding a bog to your pond, please stop in & ask us
about it.
