All pond plants are not the same. Groups of plants, ideally, should be treated differently to achieve the best results for wintering over. Below is a list of plants & how they should be left for the Winter.


For the plants below - Leave on shelf in pond where it has spent the summer. Trim back foliage to the pot.

- Iris

- Lysimachia 'aurea' (creeping jenny)

- Lysimachia 'alexander' (loosestrife)

- Myosotis Scirpoides (forget-me-not)

- Sagittaria latifolia (arrowhead)

-Glycera Maxima  (manna grass)

- Acorus Calamus  (sweet flag)

- Butomus Umbellatus (flowering rush)

- Caltha Palustris (marsh marigold)

- Equisetum Hymale (dwarf horsetail)

- Oenanthe Javanica (water celery)

- Rannunculus Repens (buttered popcorn)

- Menyanthes Trifoliata (bog bean)

- Mimulus Gluttatus  (monkey flower)

- Mentha Aquatica (water mint)


For the plants below - Leave on shelf in pond where it has spent the summer.  DO NOT cut back foliage until spring when seeing signs of new growth.

- Typha Minima  (miniature cat tail)

- Typha Latifolia  (common cat tail)

- Typha Laxmanii (graceful cat tail)

- Scirpus Tabermontaeni 'Zabrinus' (bull rush)

- Spartina pectinata (cord grass)

- Juncus Inflexus 'afro' (blue medusa)

- Juncus Effusus 'love sick blues' (blue rush)

- Arundo Donax (mediterranian reed)

- Baumea Rubiginosa  (golden sword)

- Equisetum Scirpoides (horsetail)


For the plants below - Must be brought inside and treated like a house plant.

- Canna

- Cyperus Alternafolius (umbrella palm)

- Colocasia Fontanesia (violet stem taro)

- Colocasia Imperial (varigated taro)

- Colocasia Esculenta (black magic taro)

- Ruellia 'Chi-Chi'

- Ruellia 'Katie'

- Sagittaria Montevidensis (aztec arrowhead)

- Cyperus Papyrus (egyptian papyrus)

- Thalia Dealbata (hardy** canna)

- Alternanthera Rubra (ruby creeper)

- Zantedeschia Aethipica (calla lily)

For the plants below - Cut foliage to one inch of the pot and move to the bottom of the pond.

- Nymphaea   (hardy water lily)

- Houttuynia (Camelian Plant)

- Nelumbo   (lotus)

- Marlicia Mutica (water clover)

-Pontaderia Cordata (pickerel rush)

- Myriophyllum Aquaticum (parrot feather)




The plants below cannot be over-wintered. Start fresh next spring.

- Pistia Stratoites (water lettuce)

- Eichhornia Crassipes (water hyacinth)
